Step 3 of Alberta’s reopening began July 1, 2021 kicking off a long weekend of spending on local travel throughout the province compared to the week before.

Overall

Across the province there was a slight decrease in shopping compared to the week before as Albertans took time off to spend Canada Day weekend with family and friends as the remaining restrictions on indoor social gatherings lifted.

Hotels saw a 26% increase week-over-week as local travel picked up for the long weekend ahead of the Calgary Stampede, including increases in:

Calgary: 32% increase 
Canmore: 11% increase 
Edmonton: 48% increase 
Lethbridge: 21% increase 
Medicine Hat: 91% increase 
Red Deer: 65% increase 

Bars throughout the province saw a 20% increase week-over-week, with a high of 10% in Calgary while Canmore saw the highest increase at restaurants at 23%.

Albertans also went out for summer fun at the amusement park with a 71% increase in volumes.
