The Moneris Spending Report
Moneris Solutions Corporation (“Moneris”), Canada’s largest credit and debit card processor, announced today that Canadian spending increased by 3.31 per cent during the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year. Despite this, spending volumes dropped steadily throughout the quarter, with January showing a spending increase of 4.38 per cent, while February and March showed increases of 3.35 per cent and 2.17 per cent, respectively.

The Moneris Spending Report reveals that purchases made on Valentine's Day increased by an impressive 7.84 per cent nationally, compared to the same day last year.

While many Canadians were excited by the return of the NHL hockey season this past weekend, perhaps none were more thrilled than the country’s merchants. Data released by Moneris Solutions Corporation (“Moneris”), Canada’s largest credit and debit card processor, showed that merchants from the restaurant sector (including fast food businesses, restaurants and drinking establishments) in cities where home games were played this past weekend – including Calgary, Montréal, Winnipeg and Vancouver – saw an overall increase in credit card spending of 8.96 per cent during the six hour time period analyzed, beginning two hours before game time, as compared to the previous weekend (January 12th and 13th).

Moneris Solutions Corporation (“Moneris”), Canada’s largest debit and credit card processor, announced today that Canadian spending rose by 3.45 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to the same period in 2011. However, compared to previous quarters in 2012, Q4 showed the smallest increase in dollars spent (Q1 at 5.34 per cent, Q2 at 4.67 per cent and Q3 at 4.77 per cent).

While the NHL lockout has left many Canadians frustrated over the cancelled hockey season, merchants closest to sporting arenas are being hit hardest in their pocketbooks. Data released by Moneris® Solutions, Canada's largest credit and debit card processor, showed that merchants at fast food businesses, restaurants and drinking establishments near NHL hockey arenas in Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal and Calgary have experienced a sharp overall decrease of -11.23 per cent in spending in 2012, compared to a game day in 2011.

Moneris Solutions, Canada’s largest debit and credit card processor, announced today that Black Friday and Cyber Monday saw an overall increase in spending of 6.51 per cent and 22.54 per cent respectively, compared to last year – pointing to the growing popularity of two of the U.S.’ busiest shopping days, in Canada.
